The Two Friends Declan and Simbarashe

11 Year Old Takes on 38km Cycle Challenge to Help Friend Hear.

Simbarashe Pako, an 11-year-old boy, the world had always felt the world muffled. Conversations were a blur of vibrations and frustrated frowns. At four, his parents, working tirelessly at Mr. Stanger’s farm, noticed a heartbreaking silence in their son’s life. Simba couldn’t follow instructions, and his attempts to speak were met with confused stares. The decision to send him to Jairos Jiri Centre, a haven for children like Simba, was agonizing, yet filled with hope. There, at St. Faith Primary, with its patient teachers and specialized equipment, Simba started to bridge the gap between his silent world and the symphony of sounds around him.

During a holiday at the farm, Declan Stanger, an energetic 11-year-old with a passion for cycling, found himself grounded. His brother, his usual cycling partner, was recovering from surgery. Declan, restless with pent-up energy, reached out to Simba to ride with him. He offered Simba his old bike and they began spending time together cycling. Their days were filled with laughter as they wobbled along dusty paths enjoying playful competitions on their bikes. But Declan, a perceptive soul, noticed the struggle in Simba’s communication, the confusion when instructions flew past. Determined to bridge the gap, Declan used sign language. The two formed a strong bond, becoming “brothers” in their parents’ eyes.

One morning, over breakfast, Declan, confessed to his parents his desire to help Simba purchase hearing aids.  The Stangers, their hearts overflowing with empathy, pledged their unwavering support. Declan decided on a daring feat – a fundraising cycle. He would conquer the 38km stretch from Headlands to Rusape Town Centre, pedalling not just for distance, but for the chance for Simba to hear the world. The news spread like wildfire. Locals and even people from across the globe, touched by Declan’s selfless act, reached out through social media and donations. On Saturday the 9th of  March, Declan set off. Two hours later, he crossed the finish line, exhausted but triumphant. The outpouring of support had been overwhelming – a staggering $6500 was raised.

With the help of WizEar Trust, Simba received his hearing aids on March 21st. It was a day etched in his memory forever. The money from the fundraiser is being used to pay Simba’s school fees and his other necessities. Simbarashe’s mother, Sara, beamed with excitement and expressed her deepest gratitude to Declan and his parents for their incredible support.  “Simba can finally hear me!’ she exclaimed. “I am so happy, and his language is improving daily. His peers are equally surprised to discover that Simba can hear sounds now which was practically impossible previously.”

Sara’s words highlighted the profound impact Declan’s kind act has had on Simbarashe’s life. It reminds us all that even the smallest voice can spark a chorus of hope. WizEar Trust continues to offer aftercare services to Simba to ensure proper and continued use of hearing aids as well as promote his full potential in educational and social participation.
